In the Spring of 2024, we head to Tuscany, to visit two distinct areas of the region, both wonderful for cycling. The days should be sunny, and the climate should be just right for pleasant bike riding through the Tuscan Hills.

We will spend 4 nights in Chianti, obviously famous for its wine, and 3 nights in Val D’Orcia, perhaps a name less well known, but also famous for the wine of Montepulciano, and beautiful in its own right. Both great places to ride in the hills and on the white (gravel) roads of the area.

We will stay in the beautiful and historical village of Bagno Vignoni. Its thermal pool has been frequented by illustrious personalities, such as Pope Pius II, Catherine of Siena, Lorenzo de’ Medici and many artists who had chosen the village as a holiday destination. The history of Chianti has always been deeply linked to wines and other first-class products, making it the perfect destination for a gourmet journey. You’ll experience firsthand the traditional Tuscan cuisine and wine in the towns of the region that produce the world-renowned DOCG Chianti Red Wine.

The Val D’Orcia is untouched Tuscan land, the motherland of the Strade Bianche bike race and a paradise for gravel biking. You will visit Montepulciano and Pienza, where you will gain an appreciation of both the marvelous views and buildings of these unique Renaissance towns.

Our hotel selections put you in 4- star hotels throughout the trip (and 5-star with a supplement if you desire), so you will rest very comfortably, with luxurious rooms, amenities, and surroundings. Meals are included, and you will be delighted with the world-famous local cuisine of Tuscany.

Tuscany is well known for its simple yet delicious food including Bistecca alla Fiorentina, and the hearty Ribollita soup.  Cantucci biscotti for dessert, perhaps dipped in Vin Santo wine, is a perfect end to a hearty Tuscan meal.

DAY 2 – Gaiole in Chianti ride

SUNDAY 05 MAY 2024

Our first ride through the Chianti region takes us through Gaiole in Chianti, a characteristic town in Tuscany, but also rated by Forbes as “the most idyllic place to live in Europe”. You will get a full understanding of the beauty of Tuscany on this very first ride. We will have lunch in a local restaurant, somewhere in the vicinity of Radda in Chianti.

70km / 1240m

DAY 3 – Monteriggioni ride

MONDAY 06 MAY 2024

Two nice climbs are the focal point of today’s ride that takes us to the walled, medieval town of Monteriggioni. We will ride through Radda in Chianti, following an undulating road up to Castellina in Chianti and a nice long descent into Monteriggioni. There we will stop for coffee and enjoy the town. On the return to Castellina in Chianti, we will embark on a climb of beautifully gentle slopes and be rewarded for our efforts with a Pizza Lunch in Castellina, before we head back to our hotel.

76km / 1210m

DAY 4 – Badia a Passignano ride

TUESDAY 07 MAY 2024

A little more climbing today with undulating roads hitting several peaks, some of which are steep, but short. We will ride to the historic Benedictine Abbey of Badia a Passignano, scenically located on a hilltop, amid the iconic Tuscan cypress trees. We will have lunch in the area before our return to the hotel.

73km / 1500m

DAY 5 – Crete Senesi ride

WEDNESDAY 08 MAY 2024

Today is our transfer day, leaving the Chianti region and entering Val D’Orcia. We will go by bike, passing through Siena for a coffee in the famous Piazza del Campo, and head along the Crete Sinesi, a range of hills and woods with delightful villages along the way. Yes, there are hills, but nothing we can’t conquer, especially because you will be “wowed” by the views on this ride.

70km / 1000m

DAY 6 – Montepulciano ride

THURSDAY 09 MAY 2024

Today we will ride to Montepulciano and back to our hotel, taking in the unspoiled beauty of the Val D’Orcia. A ride of about 70 km, we will have one good size climb early on, then rolling hills going through Follonica and Castellucico. With the hardest part of the ride behind us, we will take two rest breaks to partake in an espresso, a gelato, or any other local specialties. With lots of good photos, we will have plenty to talk about at dinner.

73km / 1200m

DAY 7 – Montalcino ride

FRIDAY 10 MAY 2024

Our final day is packed with climbing. Heading towards the Vivo d’Orcial hamlet, we will climb 1000 meters along the slopes of Monte Amiata, an ancient but dormant volcano, providing an interesting backdrop to our ride.  After the descent we head for the quaint village of Montalcino.

72km / 1600m

DAY 8 – Departure

SATURDAY 11 MAY 2024

After breakfast at the hotel, we will say our goodbyes and transfer you back to the airport or train station in Florence
